CIAC ANNOUNCES CANCELLATION OF REMAINDER OF WINTER SEASON TOURNAMENTS

The Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference (CIAC) has just announced that they have made the difficult decision to cancel all remaining state championship tournaments and events, effective immediately.  The decision brings the state tournament runs of our boys basketball, boys hockey and boys swim teams to an end.  The Viking swimmers were scheduled to participate in the Class LL trials at East Hartford this Saturday.  Both basketball and hockey earned wins in their first round state tournament games last night and were looking forward to their second round games scheduled for tomorrow (basketball) and Friday (hockey).  The email from the CIAC announcing the cancellation follows.

After much consideration and consultation, the CIAC has made the difficult decision to cancel all remaining CIAC winter tournament games. The CIAC understands the disappointment that student-athletes, parents, coaches, and administrators may feel as a result of this decision. However, we must always place our student-athletes’ health and safety first.

Due to continuing concerns regarding the spread of COVID-19 (coronavirus), the responses from local school districts and third-party venues have greatly varied.  Some districts have informed us that they will no longer participate in our tournaments; others have indicated that will play while limiting crowds to less than 100 people; still others have stated they will play without any spectators in attendance; and finally, neutral sites have informed us that they can no longer host our events.

Given the wide range of direction local districts are considering, coupled with diminishing availability of neutral facilities, the CIAC needs to take the lead in providing logistical direction to our membership.  Therefore, with many questions and unknowns still pending in Connecticut about COVID-19, we have made the decision to cancel our remaining winter championships so that schools can focus their attention on meeting their student’s educational needs.

BOYS BASKETBALL QUALIFIES FOR STATE TOURNAMENT, WHITE WINS 200TH GAME

The boys basketball has team has qualified for the CIAC D-III state tournament, cruising past Norwalk 63-50 in the Main Gym last night.  The team will be on the road next week (3/5 or 3/6) with the opponent and site not yet set.  Last night was also a big night for two other reasons.  The team held its annual Senior Night ceremony, thanking our seniors, co-captains Jack Schlachtenhaufen and Nick Lappas along with Tim McKeithen and Mike Maloney, as well as senior cheerleaders Dwan Boursiquot, Madison Cordwell and Josephina Trebing, for their commitment and dedication to their teams.  Finally, Head Coach Howard White hit a major milestone, winning his 200th career game as a head coach.  Congratulations to the team, to the seniors and to Coach White on a memorable night.

MAZUR WINS CLASS LL STATE CHAMPIONSHIP

Westhill senior wrestler Tommy Mazur swept through the CIAC Class LL Championship this past weekend, becoming Westhill's first state wrestling champion since Ronald Thompson won the 160 pound title in 2008.  Mazur, who wrestles at 170 pounds, moves on to this weekend's CIAC State Open Championship.  The tournament starts with the preliminary round on Friday (2/28) and will be held at New Haven's Floyd Little Athletic Center.
