The Westhill/Stamford Ski Racing Team was founded in 2013 and is the first Stamford team to compete in the Connecticut Interscholastic Ski League (CISL).  There are 27 public and private high schools that compete in CISL. In addition to Westhill, CISL high schools in Fairfield County include Greenwich, Greenwich Academy, Danbury, Fairfield, New Canaan, Ridgefield, Darien, Westport, Wilton, and Weston.  Teams race at Mt. Southington on a GS slalom course.  Like many CISL teams, the Stamford Ski Racing Team is a club sport which means athletes are required to pay to play. Although we do receive some funding from the board of education’s athletic budget costs range from season to season. Coach Kevin DeAngelo started the program in 2013, and we have grown greatly as a team through the last 10 years. Coach Fred Kelley has also been a part of the program and primarily runs the Stamford High School Practices. Coach Mike Von Wahlde also is a volunteer with the program. 

Important information for joining the team this year:

  • Races start in January and continue through mid-February with roughly one race per week.  The CISL schedule will be available in early January.  Last year, races took place on Wednesdays or Thursdays and started at 4:40 pm.

  • You do not need to have racing experience or be an expert skier to join the team, but you must have at least an intermediate skill level and be comfortable and confident skiing on blue trails. Your safety is our first priority.  

  • Racers are required to supply all of their own ski equipment and must have:

    • Helmet designed and approved for ski racing (FIS Certified) 

    • Clear lens goggles (for night racing)

    • Binding Release Test completed by a local shop 

  • On race days, we leave Westhill by the purple rock at around 1:45pm, pick up racers from Stamford High and return by 7:30-8:00 pm.  There will be no races during the week of mid-terms.  On practice and race days, skis and gear can be stored in Coach DeAngelo’s office or other select locations determined by him. 

  • Weather and schedules permitting, we will try to schedule 5 practices at Mt. Southington during the season.  

  • Land Practices will start the first week after Thanksgiving break.

  • You must have a completed athletic card (purple/Blue card) and register on the Westhill athletics page online to practice and be a part of the team.

  • Any athlete with 2 or more unexcused absences throughout the season will no longer be a part of the program and will not receive a refund.
